AREAS AFFECTED: Emmet; Cheboygan; Presque Isle; Leelanau; Antrim; Otsego; Montmorency; Alpena; Benzie; Grand Traverse; Kalkaska; Crawford; Oscoda; Alcona; Manistee; Wexford; Missaukee; Roscommon; Ogemaw; Iosco; Gladwin; Arenac; Western Chippewa; Central Chippewa; Southeast Chippewa; Western Mackinac; Eastern Mackinac; Mackinac Island/Bois Blanc Island; Beaver Island and surrounding islands; Charlevoix
DESCRIPTION: Areas of freezing fog have developed across portions of northern Michigan this evening, and is expected to continue developing through the night into Saturday morning. In prone areas, the freezing fog may be locally dense, leading to reductions in visibility. In addition to reductions in visibility, temperatures falling below freezing tonight may lead to the development of slick spots on area roadways following snowmelt from today's warmer temperatures... especially on prone surfaces such as bridges and overpasses. Be cognizant of weather conditions if traveling tonight into tomorrow morning. Use low-beam headlights if you encounter dense fog, and slow down if slippery / icy road surfaces materialize.

Graupel is a form of precipitation that is created by atmospheric conditions
which cause supercooled water droplets to contact snow crystals and freeze to
their surface.
Sometimes known as soft hail or snow pellets, graupel is delicate and easily
destroyed by touch. Whereas hail usually falls during severe weather, graupel
doesn't require such conditions to form, and can form in mild precipitation
similar to situations which produce snowfall.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped
hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.
When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area
of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical
gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific
to any geographic area.
Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole,
skypunch, and cloud hole.
