AREAS AFFECTED: Northern Will; Southern Will; Eastern Will

DESCRIPTION: At 206 AM CDT, NWS meteorologists were tracking a narrow, one mile wide, band of intense snow moving across portions of Will County. Observed snow rates beneath the band are in excess of 2 inches per hour. HAZARD...Rapidly changing conditions with visibility below one half of a mile, and quickly accumulating snow at a rate in excess of 2 inches per hour. The highest snow rates extend from Romeoville to New Lenox, and will drift southward toward Joliet and Manhattan. SOURCE...NWS Meteorologists IMPACT...The combination of localized low visibility and quick accumulations on roadways will lead to localized hazardous travel conditions. Locations impacted include... Aurora, Joliet, Naperville, Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Plainfield, Lockport, New Lenox, Peotone, Crest Hill, Manhattan, Ingalls Park, Preston Heights, Fairmont, and Crystal Lawns.

INSTRUCTION: Travel at safe speeds and following distances, and prepare for rapidly changing visibility.

Hail is a form of precipitation which is recognized by large solid balls or clumps of ice. Hail is created by thunderstorm clouds with strong updrafts of wind. As the hailstones remain in the updraft, ice is deposited onto them until their weight becomes heavy enough for them to fall to the earth's surface.

Hail storms can cause significant damage to crops, aircrafts, and man-made structures, despite the fact that the duration is usually less than ten minutes.

A mammatus cloud is a cloud with a unique feature which resembles a web of pouches hanging along the base of the cloud.

In the United States, mammatus clouds tend to form in the warmer months, commonly in the Midwest and eastern regions.

While they usually form at the bottom of a cumulonimbis cloud, they can also form under altostratus, altocumulus, stratocumulus, and cirrus clouds. Mammatus clouds warn that severe weather is close.
