DESCRIPTION: ...PROLONGED PERIOD OF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS SUNDAY THROUGH MID NEXT WEEK... ...EXTREMELY CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS POSSIBLE TUESDAY... .Recent dry conditions combining with above normal temperatures and periods of gusty winds will bring potentially critical fire weather conditions Sunday and Monday to parts of the eastern Colorado Plains. Stronger, more widespread westerly winds are expected to develop Tuesday, possibly producing extremely critical fire weather conditions with wind gusts as high as 65 mph across the plains. * AFFECTED AREA...Fire Weather Zones 250 and 251. * TIMING...For the Red Flag Warning, from 11 AM to 5 PM MST Sunday. For the Fire Weather Watch, from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening. * WINDS...Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph on Sunday. West winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 55 mph on Tuesday. * RELATIVE HUMIDITY...As low as 12 percent on Sunday and Tuesday afternoon. * IMPACTS...Conditions will be favorable for rapid fire spread. Avoid outdoor burning and any activity that may produce a spark and start a wildfire.

A combination of strong winds...low relative humidity...and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior. Stratus clouds are similar to altostratus clouds, but form at a lower altitude and are identified by their fog-like appearance, lacking the distinguishing features of most clouds.

Stratus clouds are wider than most clouds, and their base has a smooth, uniform look which is lighter in color than a nimbostratus cloud. The presence of a stratus cloud indicates the possibility of minor precipitation, such as drizzle, but heavier precipitation does not typically arrive in the form of a stratus cloud.

Altocumulus Clouds Next Topic: Altostratus Clouds

Similar to cirrocumulus clouds, altocumulus clouds are characterized by cloud patches. They are distinguished by larger cloudlets than cirrocumulus clouds but are still smaller than stratocumulus clouds.

Altocumulus clouds most commonly form in middle altitudes (between 2 and 5 km) and may resemble, at times, the shape of a flying saucer. These uncommon formations, called altocumulus lenticularis, are created by uplift in the atmosphere and are most often seen in close proximity to mountains.
